In 2019, the NC State University Food Animal Initiative sponsored the 1st International Symposium on Precision Technologies and Data Analytics for Animal Ag. The symposium was well attended and brought together industry, academia, and government agencies to discuss and learn about opportunities for precision technology and "big data" in animal agriculture. Knowing that we have to continually increase efficiency of food production to meet global population demands, precision management of food animal systems will be part of the future.
To follow up that effort, in 2021, the FAI will host the Food Animal Innovation Summit, which brings together three different symposia- the Carolina Feed Industry Fall Conference; the Animal Health and Nutrition Consortium Symposium, and the Precision Animal Systems Symposium.
The Precision Animal Systems symposium will focus on using data to help pinpoint areas of inefficiency on the farm and find solutions to those issues. Topics covered at this year's symposium will include (but not limited to): how data analysis fits in animal agriculture, economics of precision technologies, and a discussion about using precision data as a way to evaluate welfare or inform regulations.
