Eakers Dairy Highlight!

Eaker Dairy Inc.

What started in the 1960s with just a single milking barn has grown into a state-of-the-art operation housing over 800 Holsteins. Despite the growth, the farm has never lost sight of its roots. Cameron Eaker gladly met with a Southeast Dairy Business Innovation Initiative (SDBII) representative because he “Would do whatever was necessary to show everyone what these grants can do for your business”.

“We’re still a family farm,” says Eaker, who manages day-to-day operations. “We just have more cows, and more data to work with, now.”

Innovation on the Farm

What sets Eakers Dairy apart isn’t just its size, but its use of precision technology. The SDBII funds were used to purchase and install an upgraded manure management system for Eakers Dairy, significantly improving both efficiency and environmental stewardship. The system allows for more effective collection, storage, and distribution of manure, reducing nutrient runoff risk and improving overall barn sanitation. By enhancing how manure is handled, the farm is better able to recycle nutrients back into his crop fields in a controlled and sustainable manner. This investment supports long-term soil health, protects surrounding water quality, and strengthens the farm’s commitment to responsible dairy production. Eaker was very appreciative and hopeful for the future with the addition of this new precision technology on site!

Eaker has intentions to apply for funding for a feed wagon that will track more accurate feeding data. The funds are intended to be used to purchase a data-driven feed wagon designed to precisely track and manage ration distributions across the dairy herd. The system records feed weights, ingredient inclusion rates, and delivery amounts in real time, improving accuracy and consistency in daily feeding. By collecting and storing detailed feeding data, Eaker and his nutritionist can better monitor intake, reduce shrink, and quickly adjust rations based on production needs.

Eaker is not only utilizing SDBII funds to advance his technology, he is using local grants as well to increase his milk quality and cow comfort. A North Carolina Tobacco Trust Fund funded installation of a new fan system throughout the barn. He did this with hopes to disburse the animals from one congregated area. The fans were installed and what Eaker hoped came true! Cow comfort improved and the summer months were more manageable for both animal and human alike.
